La Reserve Hotel Spa & Villas - St Tropez

This week one of our fabulous South of France consultants, Rebekah, was invited to stay at the truly incredible La Reserve Hotel Spa and Villas in Ramatuelle, St Tropez.

After a rather dreary weekend in the UK, we couldn't wait to hear more about her trip in the sunshine!

"There is no better feeling than walking through Nice airport on a sunny Friday afternoon to be greeted by your very own private chauffeur. After collecting my bags and escorting me to a luxurious Mercedes-Benz, my weekend had officially begun and off to Ramatuelle I went!"

"After what seemed like a quick 1 hour 30 minute transfer, I arrived at the La Reserve Ramatuelle. I was guided into the main reception area of the hotel with a glass of champagne, soaking in the uninterrupted views of the sea whilst my bags were taken directly to the private villa."

"Arriving at the villa via the in-resort golf buggies, I was greeted by the private butler, Anne. Anne showed me around the stunning villa and helped me to settle in.

Once ready for dinner, we headed into the charming village of Ramatuelle via the in resort chauffeur service.

La Forge - the setting for the evening! A gorgeous Italian restaurant in the heart of the old village. Our chef came to our table and personally introduced himself before explaining the delicious set menu we were soon set to experience.

"Full to the brim, we were picked up and taken back to the villa to find the turn down service you would expect to receive from any 5* hotel."

"An idyllic start to the day with a mouth watering continental breakfast served at the hotel before heading back to the villa to enjoy the sunshine and, of course, the swimming pool!"

"Lunch was served by Anne and her ultra professional team and once again, the food was immaculate."

"Our group headed into St Tropez, again by the in-resort chauffeurs. The sun was beaming and the town and port were picture-perfect. We strolled around the port, browsing the boutiques and shops until it was time for something refreshing to sip."

"Club 55 - the perfect place for a glass of Rose!"

"Time to head back to the villa for our 5pm slot in the spa. We were collected and dropped off and what followed was a heavenly 50 minute deep tissue massage - I would highly recommend to everyone! This spa was possibly the best spa inside a hotel I've ever seen."

"Afterwards dinner at the La Voile, the Michelin star restaurant in the hotel, for another divine evening of fine cuisine, wine and good company."

"The next morning arrived and poolside Pilates was on the agenda! Our wonderful instructor, Benjamin, really put us through our paces."

"A well-earned brunch was served at the villa before our weekend drew to a close and we headed back to Nice airport for our return to the UK."

"All in all, a fantastic weekend spent at La Reserve Ramatuelle where you can experience the hotel, spa and restaurant from the security of a private villa. A highly recommended choice for anyone looking for 5* service."

The Best of the Cote d'Azure; St Tropez

The French Riviera is one of the most desirable and luxurious destinations for travel in the world.

Here at Elegant Address, we’re excited to be able to offer the very best in elite villa and apartment rentals in these world-class locations.

Of course, there is more to the place than just the sparkling sea and glorious sunshine, although that is a big deal breaker...

This week, St Tropez is top of our spectacular list…

A Brief History

St Tropez is synonymous with espadrilles, bronzed tans and the 60’s French star Brigette Bardot.
Outside of the fashion and pop culture we’re all aware of today, there is so much more to know about this coastal town on the French Riviera.

It begins with the grisly legend of Saint Torpes of Pisa. Torpes was a Roman soldier in the service of the Emperor Nero also working as his bodyguard.
After refusing to denounce his Christian faith, Torpes was killed and his body was left to drift out to sea in a boat with a dog and a rooster.
The legend says his body washed ashore in modern day Saint-Tropez with the bird and the dog who had left his body untouched.
After the fall of the Roman Empire, Saint-Tropez became attacked and ravaged by pirates and bandits. Lasting for a century or so, the neighbouring village of Garde Frient was established and the surrounding areas, along with Saint-Tropez became an Arabic-Muslim colony for another 100 years.

More recent history shows Saint-Tropez was one of the landing sites for the Allied assault on Southern France in August 1944.
But it was the 1960’s that really saw Saint-Tropez come out of its shell and acquire its world renowned status. Brigette Bardot not only launched her own career but also the town in the 1956 film, “And God Created Woman”. Both her characters sexuality and her own persona tied Saint-Tropez together and it became the meeting place for the new young, pretty things of the time.
Since then, Saint-Tropez has been linked to some of the world’s biggest stars with supermodels being particularly highly spotted, including Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell and Cindy Crawford. Penelope Cruz and the Hiltons are also spotted regularly on the harbour and on the beach.

Sightseeing Opportunities
Saint-Tropez really does have some fascinating things to see and to do. Make sure you give yourself time between relaxing and unwinding by taking in some of these wonderful sights.

Pampellone Beach
This massively long stretch of beautiful sand is Saint-Tropez’s main beach. It’s busy in the summertime but if you manage to stay long enough (not a hard task as it really is amazing), the sunsets are unforgettable.

This sixteenth-century fortress is perhaps Saint-Tropez’s most famous buildings and also boasts one of the town’s best views.

A quirky little museum dedicated to butterflies, it’s definitely worth a visit even if it’s not the first thing to think of. The museum was created by Dany Lartigue, son of famous photographer Jacques-Henri Lartigue.

One of the region’s most incredible museums including works from Matisse, Rodin, Kee, Signac and others. The perfect respite from the bustle of the main town.

Our Recommended Events in Saint-Tropez
Being the centre of glitz and glamour means that Saint-Tropez is the host of some exciting and unique events that need to be seen to be believed.

April 2017
Fetes des Mimosas
The Route des Mimosas is a 130km route along the coast, following the towns made famous by the Belle Epoque period. The beloved mimosa was actually introduced by the British in the 1800’s to add sunnier colours to their gardens during the late winter holidays.
During this roadtrip, there’s a definite springtime feel and the area was the first to really introduce the al fresco lunch bistros along the mimosa-lined village streets. The landscape today is sunshine yellow, signalling the start of the season.

May 2017
11th-14th May
Harley Davidson Euro Festival
Port Grimaud is the go to scene for the fantastic motorcycle displays along the beachfront. The roads around the entire region are rumbling when these gleaming machines cruise in the sun.

28th – 31st May
Les Voiles Latines Regatta
This colourful fleet of wooden fishing boats arrive in the port, replacing the luxury yachts for the weekend.

September 2017
30th Sept-8th October
Les Voiles de St Tropez Sailing Regatta

The biggest event in Saint-Tropez’s year, the last week of September sees hundreds of incredible yachts sail into the harbour to race in one of the biggest regattas in the global yachting calendar.

October 2017
Last Weekend of October
La Braderie 2017 Designer Fashion Sales

The streets of Saint-Tropez are lined with rows of heavily discounted designer goods, making this not any ordinary flea market. Give yourself plenty of time to browse through the many racks of fashions and accessories from the biggest names in fashion, including Gucci, Prada and Chanel.

December 2017
Christmas/New Year
There’s a huge calendar of events in Saint-Tropez during the festive period, ranging from ice hockey games, petting zoos and festive films shown at the cinema. Don’t forget to see Pere Noel (Santa Claus) arrive by boat in the old port on Christmas Eve and enjoy the fireworks set the sky alight on New Year’s Eve.

Best Time to Visit
If you’re looking to be in amidst all the glitz and glamour that Saint-Tropez brings, July and August are the best times to visit. The restaurants are humming, the streets are brimming and the bars and clubs gather the gorgeous and the wannabes. Everyone is here from billionaires to movie stars and it’s definitely the place to see the celebrities.

However, Saint-Tropez is beautiful all year round with plenty of sight-seeing opportunities and unforgettable experiences.

Top 5 Cote d’Azur Markets

An integral part of French lifestyle, and one of France's most famous attributes are the traditional weekly and daily markets. With a great variety of goods on offer and beautiful surrounding towns, immersing yourself in the local culture and going to a nearby market really is a 'must-do' for any trip to the South of France.

Here are our Top 5 markets to visit on the French Riviera:

Biot – Provencal market
Every Tuesday morning the Biot market takes place in the town’s historical center. From the rue Saint Sebastian to the Place Arcades, traditional products and fresh produce including vegetables and fruits are on display alongside delicious local Provencal and French products. Here you can also pick up some fashionable French clothing, jewelry and handmade dishes of Provence.

Cannes – Marche Forville
Get a taste of local life in Cannes at the Marche Forville, or Forville Market. The outdoor market is full of fresh fruits, vegetables, fish, meats, breads, cheeses and more. The perfect place to find all the ingredients you need to create your own Mediterranean dinner! You can find the farmers market Rue du Marché Forville just a few minutes’ walk from Le Vieux Port. Forville Market is open seven days a week and closes about 2pm, apart from Monday’s when it is turned into an antiques market.

St Tropez – Places Des Lices
In the heart of St Tropez’s famous Place des Lices this is a fantastic open air market sells a huge range of foods including breads, pastries, cheeses, sausages, flowers, olives, spices, herbs, fruit and vegetables as well as clothes, beautiful antique mirrors and collectables. Locals head to the market early to secure the freshest produce and to secure the best bargains, so worth setting your alarm a little earlier for this one!

Antibes – Marche Provencal
An authentic Provençal covered market in the heart of Antibes. Situated in Cours Massena in the Old Town with over 30 producers and vendors ranging from butchers, florists, cheese experts and market gardeners to tiny stalls selling spices, olives, homemade jams and fragrant soaps. A beautiful market to walk through with a true vintage French feel. In 2014, the market was awarded a ‘Certificate of Excellence’ by TripAdvisor. Fresh fruit, vegetables and flowers every morning, apart from Mondays in winter and arts and crafts every day from 3pm.

Nice - Flower market
In the shade of pretty striped awnings, hundreds of flowers make eyes at you. It will be hard to resist the multi-coloured geraniums, intense mauve fuchsias, dahlias with their anemone-shaped flowers, and the vivid impatiens being sold by the nursery vendors. Anyone strolling by these harmonious floral displays will be able to breathe in the fragrances and enjoy the colourful bouquets, plants and exotic flowers that await them.
