The History Of Film!

Part 1.

Cannes is the host of many famous festivals, including Lions, MIPIM, MIPTV, The International Luxury Travel Market & of course the Film Festival - making it a hot spot for celebrities!
This year we celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Film Festival!

Philippe Erlanger (a French writer) wanted to rival the Venice Film Festival and suggested an International film festival in France. He gained support from both the British and American film industries and organised for the first one to take place in Septermber 1939,  however it actually began in 1946 due to the end of the war.

The event was across 15 days showcasing over 40 feature length films, and more than 50 short films.
Initially there was a jury of 18 people, including representatives all with different nationalities from each country that had entered films, this changed in 1947 when the jury was entirely French, this remained that way until 1953 when they included members from other European countries.

The festival rapidly gained reputation in the 50's and an increase in media coverage due to the appearance of many stars, including: Grace Kelly, Brigitte Bardot and Sophia Loren. Due to economic reasons the festival didn't take place in 1948 and 1950, but it returned successfully, in the purpose built Palais des Festivals et des Congres. It was then moved to take place in Spring (avoiding clashing with the festival in Venice!)

In 1952, the Palais des Festivals was made the permanent home for the event.
The event remained much the same until 1955 where the Palme d'Or (Golden Palm) award for best film of the festival was introduced, replacing the Grand Prix du Festival, which was used in early years. It is regarded as the most prestigious film festival in the world, with an attendance of more than 30,000!
